Sabbath for Ministers

A series of services, programs and retreats specifically designed for lay and ordained ministers and those preparing for ministry in all faiths

"Be still and know…"

Those who are preparing for or work in committed ministries often forget that fidelity to service includes taking time to nurture his or her own body and spirit. Jesus invited his disciples to, "come away to a deserted place and rest for awhile…" Yet, how often this invitation remains unheeded today due to the pressures of program deadlines, budget struggles and the unmet needs of others who call out daily for our time, prayers and compassion.

The mission of the Sabbath for Ministers program at Mercy Center is to provide ongoing opportunities for ordained and lay ministers to "be still" and listen to the wisdom of the spirit as it continues to call each to health, wholeness and holiness through all the demands and invitations of ministry.

Sabbath for Ministers is offered in response to a series of discussions and focus groups conducted with an ecumenical group of ministers, and the many reflections and requests of those in ministry who turn to us at the Center each year for spiritual direction, consultation, facilitated discussions, education and private retreats. The program offers:

  • A safe, supportive, ecumenical environment to come as you are and spend unplanned hours or days on Mercy Center’s beautiful 33-acre campus for rest and renewal.
  • Services such as spiritual and retreat direction and supervision, consultation and referral that encourage you to remain aware of the life-giving call within and provide you with professional help with discernment in life and ministry.
  • Programs and retreats to enliven your spirit in community with others, including informal talks, conferences, facilitated peer discussions, group reflection and spiritual direction.
  • Resources to enrich and expand your spirit including the Center’s hands-on creativity room; art gallery with changing exhibitions; labyrinth overlooking the Sound; and bookstore and gift shop.
